20 Ways You Can Take Part in International Podcast Day 2022
it's the perfect time to find new podcasts and support your favourite hosts and shows
If you’re a podcaster, you might already know that podcasting has its own celebratory day. But as a listener, you might not - so here’s a little bit more about International Podcasting Day.
Created in 2014, International Podcast Day is an annual event that takes place on September 30. From the event’s website:
In 2014, National Podcast Day was celebrated. After quickly realizing the power of podcasts internationally, we rebranded into what we are today – International Podcast Day, celebrated on September 30. Over the years, we have live streamed over 200 hours from nearly 100 nations featuring 360 podcasters sharing their podcast journeys, personal stories, and expertise.
It’s a mixture of online and offline events, though recently it’s been primarily online due to the pandemic and the subsequent restrictions that were in place.
It’s a great way to celebrate this wonderful medium we’re in, whether you’re a podcaster or listener. From connecting with other podcasters or fans of certain shows, to sharing the podcasts you listen to, or even introducing friends, family members, or colleagues to the podcast world, there’s something for everyone.
So how can you get involved? Here are 20 ways, for both podcasters and listeners (some may overlap, but they’re still a great way to celebrate).
International Podcast Day for Podcasters
Create a list of your favourite podcasts that inspired you to start, and share/recommend them.
Give a shout out to your favourite creators on your next episode (or create a bonus one just for the event and publish that).
Share your favourite episode from other podcasters every hour on social media, and why you love that one in particular.
If you offer premium content, make it free for a period of time so anyone can access.
Share the tools and companies that have helped you be a better podcaster.
Give shoutouts to all your listeners that give you feedback, reviews, shares, etc.
Look for questions online from new podcasters who are struggling in your area of expertise, and give them the help they need.
Ask your audience what their favourite podcasts are, and share them with your listeners.
Listen to a brand new show that sounds interesting, and leave a review for that podcaster - it’ll make their day.
Run a fun giveaway for new podcasters where the winner receives unique one-to-one time with you on their biggest issue.
International Podcast Day for Listeners
Check out the #InternationalPodcastDay hashtag online and find new podcasts that sound interesting to listen to.
Sit down with a friend and listen to your favourite episode of your favourite podcaster, tell them why it’s you favourite, and talk about the episode afterwards.
Create a playlist of your favourite shows and send that to friends, or share online.
Leave a review for your favourite shows.
Tag your favourite podcaster online, or send them an email, and tell them what their show means to you.
Support your favourite podcaster, either by signing up for their free content/newsletter or supporting their paid stuff (either as a one-off gift or recurring subscription).
Buy their merch, if they have a store. Post a photo of you wearing that merch, and how others can get it.
Tell anyone and everyone why you listen to podcasts, and why they should too.
Thank the developer of the podcast app you listen on (especially if it’s a smaller app with a smaller team).
Change your social network profile image to one of the many International Podcast Day promo images, and get people asking you “what’s that?”, so you can start spreading the word. :)
These are just a few ways you can get involved - it’s entirely up to you on how you take part, and in what shape and form. But hopefully they give you some ideas on how to celebrate this annual event.
And, if you want to support this particular podcast (self-promo alert!!), here’s how:
